Today’s new music spotlight is on Birthday Card.

Location: Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire

Line-up: Josh Saw (vocals/guitar), George Harrison (synths), Conor Richards (lead guitar), Tom Ritchie (bass), Leslie Adriaans (drums)

About: Birthday Card’s sonic style is attributed to a variety of influences – from Kanye West to Kylie Minogue, from The Streets to The Sugababes. Their performance at The Great Escape Festival 2019 went down as one of the highlights of the weekend, the result of two years fine-tuning their live sound in the UK’s underground clubs and venues.

What Hidden Herd say: Looking for an introduction to Birthday Card’s genre-straddling electro-pop? The Aylesbury-based quintet have just re-released their debut single and it’s an occasion worth celebrating. Wrap your ears around the stylistic sprawl that is ‘Shy Away’ below, which combines infectious grooves, colourful guitar lines and pitch-shift vocals with aplomb.
