Today’s new music spotlight is on Hanya.

Location: Brighton

Line-up: Heather Sheret (guitar/vocals), Benjamin Varnes (guitar), Dylan Fanger (bass), Jack Watkins (drums)

About: A visceral treat for the senses. Swirling sunshine guitars, heavy energetic beats, thick-grooved basslines and sweet nothings, all spiralling to a heavy weight of impressive powerful growls, inviting the listener into an encompassing headspace to explore Heather’s introversions. Shoegaze sensibilities, folded with the grunge psychedelia of an early Jefferson Airplane, who’ve been couch-surfing with Kevin Shields’ for too long.

The two-piece turned four-piece are long-time friends. First of all a duo, featuring Heather Sheret and Jack Watkins, they’ve enlisted the help of old friends Benjamin Varnes and Dylan Fanger to create their dream record, a heady concoction of 90s-esque dream pop/shoegaze extravaganza, complete with keys and harmonies that wouldn’t be amiss in a modern-day Blur recording.

There’s a lot to be said for a group hailed by Clash Magazine as able to “create a truly mesmerising and unforgettable live experience” so best to see it yourself.

What Hidden Herd say: Blending dream pop, shoegaze and 60s/70s psychedelia, Hanya‘s hypnotic concoctions are an immersive experience. The lead single from the Brighton quartet’s brand new EP ‘Sea Shoes’ is part Cocteau Twins, part Velvet Underground & Nico – a stylish and shimmering sonic delight that feels like the soundtrack to a sprawling desert landscape.
