Our bland Thursday got interesting at noon, when ‘A Love Like Kerosene’ – the introductory offering from mysterious Italian trio SAMA – dropped into our laps. Their sound is one of summertime sadness; a sparsely arranged electro pop nugget that is bittersweet from the get-go. In three words? Beach heartbreak comedown.

It initially recalls Mr. Probz‘ mega-smash ‘Waves’, with the lone shimmering guitar evoking flickering light as it ricochets off the ocean blue, and it could just as well be as big a hit too; singer Francesco Samarelli’s soulful croon holds a wonky allure over its smooth R&B-influenced refrain. But there’s enough off-kilter hooks to hint at a hidden depth to the band, namely the curveball bridge which shows they share the same penchant for restrained prog as alt-J and the like.
