Prolific Londoners CHILDCARE never disappoint. The Hidden Herd favourites are back, continuing on their sharp upward trajectory with brand new single ‘Man Down (King Kong Shake)’ – a low-key slice of Blur-ish art-pop that rallies against toxic male stereotypes.
With the quartet set to bring their electrifying live show to Hidden Herd Presents: CHILDCARE on Saturday 20th October at Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar, we spoke to magnetic frontman Ed Cares about their latest release and more.
‘Man Down (King Kong Shake)’ is a seductive slowburner. How did the track come about?
“The chords and melody I worked out on my parents piano last Christmas and it’s had various manifestations since then. I knew I wanted there to be a line about “moisturising my knuckles”, so that was one of the first lyrics. When we went into the studio it was going to be just bass, guitar and vocals and our producer put a simple drum beat down as a metronome, but we liked it so much that we decided to keep it. It’s our first use of non-live instruments. We are pushing the boundaries of music.”
How did CHILDCARE start out and what inspired the name?
“A few years ago I started making music when I was working as a nanny, I’d drop the kids off at school, spend the daytime in the basement of the nanny’s house writing songs and then I’d pick the kids up, help with homework and cook dinner. That routine happened for about three years, but I slowly added musicians to perform what I’d written live and it’s since turned into a proper band with everyone writing together and contributing.”
Who are the Top 5 biggest influences on your sound right now?
“Vivaldi, Right Said Fred, Radiohead, Oasish (Oasis covers band) and St. Mary’s Brass Band”
Any other new artists you have played with and would recommend?
“We’re about to go on tour with Lazy Day, they’re very cül”
And finally, what does the future hold for Childcare?
“Well, we’re going on tour very soon and playing Sticky Mike’s Frog Bar on the 20th October. We might do another single in November, then we’re putting our debut album out at the start of next year!”
