If you’ve yet to have the pleasure, Hot Dreams are purveyors of shiver-inducing sonic delights that quicken the heart.

Since their 2016 inception, the London quartet have consistently sounded like a band braced for the big league and latest rouser ‘California’ is no exception, a tune brimful of guitar-fuelled euphoria that sweeps and soars like a murmuration.

Ahead of what’s set to be an anthemic set at Brighton’s Patterns on Saturday 13th July for Hidden Herd Festival 2019, we talked influences, gigs and music recommendations with frontman Kai Fennell.

How would you describe Hot Dreams to a stranger?

“Melodic, harmonic, loud and quiet.”

Who are the biggest influences on your sound and why?

“Beach House, Foals, Timber Timbre and Pumarosa to name just a few. We have never stuck to one sound when writing music, we’ve constantly wanted to move forward with our sound which is probably why we haven’t released much music yet. Most of these bands have such a varied sound throughout their collection of music, this is something we feel is really important. We love the combination of dance/guitar music elements that Foals and Pumarosa produce, and the more chilled, weird sounds that Beach House and Timber Timbre produce.”

What was the best gig you’ve played so far?

“The Village Underground show on tour with Palace. We had never played to such a big crowd before and I’ll never forget that feeling.”

You’re based in South London – what’s your local music scene like?

“Cam and I both live in Stoke Newington and I wouldn’t say we’ve experienced the local music scene or if there even is one. We’re all based in different areas and started the band in Brighton where we played with a lot of friends growing up. There are always amazing bands coming out of Brighton.”

Who are the THREE other new artists we should listen to right now and why?

“Penelope Isles – wicked Brighton band who we’ve had the pleasure of playing with a couple of times. Their debut album is coming out soon and the first couple of singles sound BIG.

Wovoka Gentle – I had heard one of their songs (‘Brandscombe’) which is so beautiful, we managed to catch them live at TGE this year and they blew us away. Every song is different to the other.

Art Feynman – Luke Temple’s (Here We Go Magic) latest project which I fell in love with recently. Similar sounds to Arthur Russell.”

You’re playing Hidden Herd Festival 2019 on Saturday 13th July – which other bands are you most looking forward to seeing on the day?

“We’re most looking forward to catching MarthaGunn’s set. We were supposed to play a show with them a few months back, but Alex fell out of a tree and broke his foot a week before. Now we get to make up for it.”

And finally, what does the rest of 2019 hold for Hot Dreams?

“We’re constantly writing. At the moment we’re in the middle of recording/mixing our debut EP which we’re going to self-release. We cannot wait to get more music out this year!”
