James Hersey’s song ‘Miss You‘ has received over 74,000,000 plays on Spotify and his latest song ‘Everyone’s Talking‘ looks like it’ll achieve the same success. The electropop singer-songwriter will be headlining London’s Camden Assembly on Monday the 15th of May, and in the lead-up he managed to find time in his busy schedule to speak to us.

Honne‘s Remix of ‘Miss You‘ is incredible, how did that collaboration come about?

We had an offer to go on tour supporting Honne in Europe, and I’d been listening to their music for some time already. It felt natural to ask if they’d like to do a remix, and they loved the song.

Do you prefer playing live or being in the studio?

I have a passion for both, and I believe a balance between the two is perfect. If I’ve been on the road too long I get homesick, and if I’m in studio too much I can’t wait to go out again.

What are your plans for 2017?

The Pages EP comes out in just a few weeks – my first worldwide release – super excited about that! Then I’ve got some sweet shows lined up, but I’m not filling my schedule – I want to focus on finishing another EP, and getting more music to the fans.

Miss You‘ has had an incredible reception on Spotify, how does that feel? And what’s your opinion on streaming services and how they’re changing the music industry?

I grew up collecting CD’s and recording songs on cassette tapes, so I have a certain nostalgic connection to “physical music.” I miss it sometimes, but as a travelling artist I absolutely love having a weightless record collection.

I was hoping ‘Miss You‘ could be a bridge for people to enter my world of songwriting and production. The numbers are a sign of encouragement to stay on my path, and keep writing songs I love.

What are the best things and worst things about your job?

There’s nothing like sharing the experience of my music with fans on the road, but it does keep me from having a real home. I miss my friends and family, and I miss having someone close to share it all with.

What’s the best/most interesting gig you’ve ever played?

One of my favourite shows ever was a private gig in Spain. It was a beautiful mediterranean home in the lush hills of a small island.
