The latest batch of songs from Bristol-based boy-girl duo Meadowlark sound like they were recorded in the dead of night. By the soft glow of candlelight, while the house around quietly creaks as if it speaks, these hushed odes would make a fitting companion. The new EP entitled ‘Nocturnes’ features cinematic versions of previously released Meadowlark singles, which have been reimagined as stripped back, string-drenched night ballads. With the collection of late night reworks due for release on March 10th, including a cover of a Sugababes earworm anthem, we spoke to singer Kate McGill to talk about Meadowlark‘s past, present and future.
Your new EP, ‘Nocturnes’, features an awesome cover of ‘About You Know’ by Sugababes. How did this come about?
“I’ve always been a HUGE fan of the song and I try and put it on at nearly every social event I’m at, ha! It’s an undeniable pop banger, but it definitely has a dark side to it which makes me love it even more. When it came to choosing a cover for our ‘Nocturnes’ EP, this one came to mind immediately. I had so much fun singing and re-interpreting it.”
How did you guys get together?
“I used to be a solo artist, and Dan made (and still kinda does!) music videos for a living. We both grew up in Plymouth and knew of each other, so when it came to filming my second music video – Dan was the man for the job. We became really good friends off the back of that and when we both started looking for new inspiration and a new musical project, we both thought of each other. We clicked musically from day one and it’s all been plain sailing from there!”

Who are the Top 5 biggest influences on your sound right now?
Any other new bands that you’ve played with and would recommend?
And finally, what does 2017 hold for Meadowlark?
“It holds much music making and releasing. This is our year. Our album’s gonna come out towards the end, we think! We’re so excited for people to finally hear it and see what we’ve been up to behind the scenes. Also plenty of touring. We love that shit.”
