Method Actress‘s sound is instantly evocative and affecting – a wintry fusion of dreamy shoegaze and post-rock that will send a tingle scampering down the spine.

On stunning recent single ‘Mistress’ – recorded with fellow Brightonian Theo Verney – reverb-drenched guitars climb like plumes of breath in the cold dim dawn above a motorik beat, providing the perfect monochrome backdrop for frontman Milo McNulty’s brooding baritone.

With the bittersweet concoction making waves on the south coast and beyond, we talked to the Brighton four-piece to discuss all things Method Actress.

‘Mistress’ is a hazy delight. How did the track come about?

Milo (vocals/guitar): “I started out by writing the song on acoustic guitar and it really developed its hazy, dreamier texture when we played it together as a unit. Lyrically, the song is trying to capture a sense of yearning for change and peace of mind.”

How did Method Actress start out?

Len (drums) and Kit (bass): “We were all playing in separate bands whilst Max and Milo started working on some new material. We ended up all deciding to come together to flesh the ideas out and start something new.”

What inspired your name?

Milo (vocals/guitar): “The name is a metaphor for how I often feel: as if I am playing a role day to day, going through the motions so to speak. I think other people share this feeling too.”

Who are the Top 5 biggest influences on your sound right now?

Kit (bass): “Slowdive. Seminal shoegaze wizards, their use of both texture and atmosphere is incredible”

Max (guitar): “Perfume Genius. Love the heavier electronic sound of the new material, which has inspired some of my more recent writing”

Milo (vocals/guitar): “Elliot Smith and Porches. Songwriting for both is at once melancholic and triumphant; it’s really effective”

Len (drums): “Wand. It’s my favourite Corey Hansen project so far and I can’t stop listening to the new album, it’s a totally new direction and the drumming across the record is killer.”

Any other new artists you have played with and would recommend?

“We were lucky enough to play with some great bands last year, all the legends: Happy Couple, Underwater Boys, Barbudo, Beachtape, Seal Pup… looking forward to playing with more in 2018.”

And finally, what does the future hold for Method Actress?

“We’re recording some spicy new tracks. Hold tight. Coming soon. Maybe March?”
