After capturing the attention of Never Fade Records at their monthly acoustic night way back in September, SONNY has finally released his debut single ‘Princess‘. The expressive ballad demonstrates the multi-instrumentalist’s ability to effortlessly combine Indie, Soul and R&B influences. Released through Never Fade Records, home of Gabrielle Aplin and the magnificent Hannah Grace, the future looks bright for this 17-year-old.

What bands do you admire?

Even though some people don’t like them, I love Coldplay. I really like their album Mylo Xyloto. Everything’s Not Lost, from Parachutes, is really good too. I’m mixed with my tastes from my mum and dad. My mum’s more into Soul, Stevie Wonder and stuff like that. Then my Dad is into acoustic artists like Ray Lamontagne and Newton Faulkner.

Out of the songs you’ve got already, what is your favourite to perform?

I think it’s ‘Princess‘. It’s the one I enjoy playing most because I feel like people relate to it. Everyone’s had a relationship where the girl’s been a diva or something like that.

What’s your plans for 2017?

I’ve got ‘Hopeless Romance’ coming out on the 24th of March, I’m excited about that. I’m doing a few festivals in the summer and hopefully I’ll release another EP by the end of the year. We’ve got so many songs, we’re just writing constantly. We just want to get them out while they’re still fresh and we still love them.

Where do you find inspiration from?

I was in a relationship last year so a lot of songs came from that and now I’m just single. I tend to just think of scenarios then just write about it. Usually it’s got to be about something I’ve been through.

Say you’re stranded on a desert island and you have to pick three albums to listen to. What would they be?

James Morrison – ‘Undiscovered
Stevie Wonder – ‘Songs in the Key of Life
Coldplay – ‘Mylo Xyloto

Have you got any dream venue’s that you would like to play?

I was talking to the band about this last night and we would love to do Victoria’s Secret, when the models are going past you and that. Red Rocks would be cool, it’s like on a mountain or something. Mumford and Sons played there. I would love to do it but it’s like a long shot, you’ve got to be pretty big to do that.

How’s the tour with Gabrielle been?

I’ve got all my family down tonight so I’m buzzing about it. Gabrielle’s so nice. Bath was pretty good because it was a massive room and she’s from Bath as well. It’s a good experience, I’m learning all the time. I’m only 17 at the end of the day, I’m still new to it all.

How did it feel when you signed to Never Fade Records?

So good probably because of the champagne as well. It’s all going so well and ‘Princess‘ has already had thousands and thousands of views. Before that no one even knew who I was.

Your debut EP is called Hopeless Romance, what’s the most hopelessly romantic thing you’ve ever done?

I actually don’t know. I can’t think of one off the top of my head.

You can catch Sonny at The Cluny in his hometown of Newcastle on the 24th of March. He’s also at Live at Leeds on April the 29th, alongside Rag ‘N’ Bone Man, Gabrielle Aplin an Nothing But Thieves.
