They have one of our favourite band names in recent memory, but Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes are way more than just a odd tribute to the wondrous peepers of a Hollywood legend.
Need proof? Hit play on hazy new number ‘Swim Deep’, a glacial dream-pop tune in the vein of Cocteau Twins that melds jangly guitarwork, swirling synths and reverb-drenched vocals.
With the song out now on Rama Lama Records as part of atmospheric debut EP ‘Four Waters’, we caught up with the Stockholm quartet to hear their story so far.
‘Swim Deep’ is stunning. How did the track come about?
“Thank you! It’s actually the oldest song of ours since Tilde wrote it when she was 16 (we’re all 22). The song is inspired by the good ol’ feeling of wanting to disappear and hide from life and all the embarrassing moments you happen to be the star of. The recorded version is pretty much the same as the one from six years ago, but we gave that baby a SBDE-make over and now she’s the queen of the prom!”
How did Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes start out?
“More or less through social media. In like June two years ago, Tilde tweeted out that Siri and her wanted to start a band since they were dying of boredom after not playing in a band for a year. Elias, who just had moved back from London after his band had split up, was the only one who responded since he was more or less on the same boat. The three of us met up over some gnocchi and the vibe was definitely right, our chakras were aligned. Elias then contacted Edvin whom he had met through an Arctic Monkeys forum in 2012 and now we are here, two years later on a blog on the internet talking about how we all met through the internet, haha.”
Your name is INCREDIBLE. What was the inspiration?
“The name comes from a playlist we created where we all could share songs we liked and what inspired us when we first started the band. When we were booked for our first gig, we didn’t really have a name, so jokingly we took the name until we could come up with a better name. But with three singles and an EP out next Friday, we still haven’t come up with a better name, so our plan kinda backfired.”
Who are the Top 5 biggest influences on your sound right now?
“Future Islands, Talking Heads, Yumi Zouma, Arctic Monkeys, and TOPS.”
Any other new bands that you’ve played with and would recommend?
“Cat Princess, Melby, Delagoon, Delsbo Beach Club, Gorilla Cult, Bodega Sisters, CHANCVN and New Feelings.”
And finally, what does the remainder of 2017 hold for Steve Buscemi’s Dreamy Eyes?
“We are releasing our EP and of course there will be some sort of celebration for it, cause we love to throw parties! After that, we will get started on working on new material but also relax and take it easy haha. We all live pretty hectic lives outside the band, so it will be nice to be able to wind down a bit before taking on 2018, which we have made fun plans for!”
