Today’s new music spotlight is on Petrie.
Line-up: George Petrie (vocals/keys) and Laurie Debnam (guitar)
About: George and Laurie both grew up in Hertfordshire, playing in separate local rock bands, but they say the time they had away from making music together built up their friendship and bond. Now based in London, the dynamic duo have come together as Petrie. Their second EP, titled ‘Self-Destruct’, has been described as the pop antithesis to their debut ‘Slurs’ EP. The new release features straight-up single ‘June’, contemplative tracks ‘The Weather’ and ‘Lion’ as well as the stand out title-track ‘Self-Destruct’ which bubbles with all the excitement of weekend nostalgia, vibrates with the fear of falling in love and fuses inflections of club music and hip hop with it’s maximalist pop sound world. As George puts it: “This EP attempts to purge the darkness, irony and mystique of our ‘Slurs’ EP; the obsession with ‘vibe’, ‘groove’ and whatever, replacing it with honest, colourful lyrics and sonic backdrops that tumble out without fanfare. Melancholic and manic, ecstatic and unashamedly neurotic, it represents a difficult year of roadblocks and rebirth – The old Petrie self-destructed for endless tiresome reasons and now we’re building a new, more personal world of tantalising heartbreak, wonderful myths of summer and a bounty of ice cream van lemon ice.”
What Hidden Herd say: Petrie stitch together hip-hop, RnB and more to create a wonderfully vibrant world of prismatic electro-pop bangers. Sophomore EP ‘Self-Destruct’ is their unabashed rebirth; cue irresistible grooves, sun-inflected sonics and unshiftable earworms.
