Today, our new music spotlight is on Saltwater Sun.
Line-up: Jen Stearnes (vocals), Dan Kingham (guitar), Joel Neale (guitar), Rob Carter (bass), Benny Chandler (drums)
About: UK based quintet crafting sun-drenched, blistering pop. Punctured by explosive guitars and deftly fusing elements of shoegaze and indie with the edginess of garage rock, Saltwater Sun and marshalled by Jennifer Stearnes’ gritty yet infectious vocals.
Childhood friends, the group formed in Reading and have become known for their energetic live shows, with appearances at 2Q festival and Reading and Leeds festivals 2018, kicking of this year as main support for Jimmy Eat World and The Amazons.
What Hidden Herd say: Marking a triumphant start to 2019, Reading’s punchiest quintet return with the colossal and sincere ‘Blood’. Musically, ‘Blood’ takes their trademark bite and spreads their opus ever-further, teasing with gentle ebbs and flows before erupting into choruses that are written to be sung loud, proud and fierce.
Spoken from lead singer Jen Stearnes, who wrote this song as an ode to her late father, ‘Blood’ is about “finding solace in the idea that we might transcend death through lineage”, and with this thought, we see Saltwater Sun opting to find the silver linings in the things that challenge us most. The result is a track which carries the weight of their usual vigour, but with an added grasp.
