Today’s new music spotlight is on The Wants.
Location: New York
Line-up: Madison Velding-VanDam (guitar, vocals), Jason Gates (drums, electronics), Heather Elle (bass)
About: Fuelled by the organic buzz formed around shows at SXSW and debut single ‘Clearly A Crisis’, NYC’s The Wants mirror new wave sensibilities with off-kilter hooks. A post-punk outfit with a sultry undertone, The Wants deliver songs that are sonically dark and poignant but with an acute pop sensibility.
Gathering inspiration from front-man Madison’s hometown of Detroit and the bleak emptiness that plagues the highways that circle it, The Wants‘ sound on latest single ‘Fear My Society’ is reminiscent of the isolation and economic dissolution of Midwestern America. The lyrics reflect intensely on personal pressures as well as the ever-changing political landscape of America as a whole.
Madison and bassist Heather are also members of art-punk band Bodega, with Madison fulfilling both guitar duties for both bands simultaneously.
What Hidden Herd say: Weaving together elements of new wave and minimal techno, NYC art-punks The Wants create music that’s both disconcerting and danceable. Their latest and best offering, the 80s-tinged ‘Fear My Society’, surrounds its jerky bass groove with dark sonics and infectious vocal hooks. Tune in below.
