Today’s new music spotlight is on VC Pines.

Location: London

Line-up: Jack Mercer (vocals/guitar)

About: VC Pines is Jack Mercer, totally immersed in a well of alternative soul, poetry and punk performance. Alongside a seven-piece band, VC Pines delivers deep organ drones and trills to provide the dark underbelly for this alt-soul avenue, while a seventies-esque sound sugarcoats the grit with trumpet and trombone.

‘Bones’ is his first release since the casually hectic success of the ‘Indigo’ EP on Fierce Panda Records back in the spring when the VC Pines big bold band played sold-out shows at The Lexington and The Great Escape.

Much like early single releases ‘Garden Of The Year’ (a Steve Lamacq Livener and 6 Music playlist smash in late ’18) and January’s slinky ‘Vixen’ (itself a Jack Saunders fave on Radio One earlier in 2019), ‘Bones’ finds VC Pines in vivaciously playful soulful mode, albeit with a shadowy undercurrent.

What Hidden Herd say: With his poetic strand of alt-soul that feels destined to be heard far and wide, VC Pines is making big strides – and deservedly so. The London singer-songwriter’s brand new single continues the high bar, with its silky combo of jazz-tinged hooks, glowing organ and parping trumpet. Hit play on ‘Bones’ below.
