Today’s new music spotlight is on Yawwn.
Location: Wimbledon, London
Line-up: Toby Hasler-Winter (vocals), Rory Jones (guitar/vocals), Mike Barnes (keys/guitar/vocals), Tom Baxter (bass/vocals) and Jack Yardley (drums)
About: Yawwn are a South West London five-piece that blend psych-rock and indie-pop. Wrapping indie pop sensibilities into toothsome riffs and sinuous guitar play, the shimmering swagger of this outfit has been making waves since the release of their debut single ‘Partisan’.
Cultivating an underground scene in the SW postcodes, the band have been running their own night, Club Yawwn, inviting friends from around the UK to play and DJ at these secret sell-out shows. Following the release of their debut EP ‘Body I’m In’ last year, the band have just released ‘Mantissa’ – the third in a trio of new singles released in the space of the past month, following ‘New Life’ and ‘Gotta Wanna Get Somethin’ Goin”.
What Hidden Herd say: Yawwn are a far from tired or boring proposition, touting a heady mélange of melodic psych lilts, 80s synths and indie disco hooks. ‘Mantissa’ – the final instalment in a trilogy of vibrant singles – is every bit the towering conclusion to the saga, a stratospheric banger that recalls The Killers circa ‘Day & Age’.
